About Tony:
Tony North is a distinguished photographer based in Manchester, England, renowned for his captivating work in macro and landscape photography. With a profound appreciation for the natural world, Tony masterfully reveals the intricate beauty of often-overlooked subjects, from the delicate structures of insects, flowers, and fungi to the expansive grandeur of rural, coastal, and urban landscapes. His portfolio is further distinguished by a specialisation in astrophotography, skillfully capturing celestial wonders.
Relatively new to the professional photography scene, having dedicated himself to serious photography in 2016 and macro work in 2017, Tony has rapidly achieved significant acclaim. His artistic vision is not merely to document, but to create works of art that evoke aesthetic pleasure, prioritising artistic impact alongside technical excellence. This philosophy is informed by his background as a trained psychologist and teacher, bringing a unique depth to his observational skills and his ability to connect with his audience.
Tony's dedication and talent have been recognised with numerous prestigious awards. He was notably named the Overall Winner of the International Garden Photographer of the Year in 2023. His accolades also include Overall Winner of N-Photo Photographer of the Year in 2022, and securing 2nd place overall in the Amateur Photographer of the Year in 2020. Further testament to his skill, he holds the DPAGB (Distinction from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain) and BPE4* (British Photographic Exhibitions) awards, alongside an impressive collection of medals and commendations from various national and international competitions, including the Bug Photographer of the Year and ND Awards.
A passionate advocate for his craft, Tony is committed to sharing his knowledge and inspiring fellow photographers. He conducts a variety of workshops, including urban photography sessions in Manchester and London, and offers an 8-part online macro photography course. He is also a sought-after speaker, delivering talks on macro photography, landscapes, flora and fauna, abstract photography, and the biology of the eye. Tony is an active member of the South Manchester Camera Club, where he leads a group specialising in macro and landscape photography, and is a member of Butterfly Conservation, reflecting his particular fondness for photographing butterflies and damselflies.
Driven by a continuous pursuit of excellence, Tony is currently working on a book focused on macro photography, promising to further contribute to the field he is so passionate about. His work continues to be celebrated in exhibitions and he remains an influential voice in contemporary nature photography. We love him on Camversation!
