About the event:

I am  so excited  to have  photographic artist, Kas Stone, to come and speak to the community about her work. When I saw her pictures I knew they would be something the community would enjoy! Kas is frequently asked 'are they pictures or paintings' which is why she calls them 'photographic art' They are her personal interpretation of reality!

About the Talk

Most people think that “making a photo” is a simple matter of pointing a camera at something interesting and pressing the shutter button. Voila! But photographers know better. In honing our photographic skills we come to appreciate the rich complexity of craft, artistry and personal vision that goes into every picture. We also learn that what really makes a photograph is how effectively it communicates our innermost feelings, thoughts and stories to a viewer.

This presentation features an integrated approach to the photographic process, from the time we feel the first stirrings of visual inspiration, through the labyrinth of technical and compositional decisions we make when crafting an image, to the finished photograph we present to the world.

Kas will share her image-making workflow, illustrated with stories and before/after examples from her portfolio to show how the personal choices we make in the field, behind the camera, at the computer – and even in our lives! – contribute to the making of a photograph.

About Kas:

Kas Stone is a professional photographer based in Nova Scotia, Canada, where her work is inspired by the wild coastal scenery and moody weather right outside her door. Her portfolio includes an extensive list of presentations, exhibitions and publications, with several books and feature articles in Canadian and U.K. magazines. She favours a thoughtful, project-oriented approach to photography, exploring the landscape in the context of broader environmental and human themes.
