About the event:
Norfolk and North Yorkshire are two of England's most different landscapes. One is wide, flat and open to the sky. The other is steep valleys, dry-stone walls and weathered rock.
Ruth Grindrod knows both well. In this talk she sets them side by side and shows how the contrast between them can feed your own creative vision, wherever you photograph.
As always with Ruth, there are processing demos too. Her aim is to keep the editing simple and still get excellent results.
Not in Norfolk or Yorkshire? This is still for you
Ruth's pictures come from two corners of England, but you do not need to live near either of them, or ever plan to visit, to get a lot from this evening.
The ideas work wherever you are and whatever you photograph. Every place has wide, open views and small, hidden details. Every place has soft days and hard, moody ones. Ruth will show you how to notice them and how to use the contrast, so you can take the same approach to your own coastline, hills, countryside or local park.
What Ruth will cover
The drama of scale. How to photograph the long coastlines and low horizons of the east, and how that differs from the deep valleys and weathered stone of the north.
Chasing light and texture. Working with soft, shifting coastal light, and with the stronger, moodier shadows of the moors.
Creative storytelling. Looking past the postcard view to find small details, abstract patterns and a personal sense of place, in any landscape.
Processing demos. Ruth's own editing, kept simple, so you can follow along and use it on your own pictures.
Whether you have photographed landscapes for years or you are still finding your way with composition, there is something here for you.

From Mark
Ruth has been presenting for Camversation since 2021, and her last evening with us was Amazing Landscapes in September 2024.
I have had the privilege of meeting Ruth in person, and of enjoying her photography on the wall at an exhibition in Norwich. She is a superb photographer, and someone I hold in the highest esteem.
Tickets
Two options. The £12 ticket includes everything in the £6 one, so please choose one rather than adding both.
£6, the talk and the recording.
Join us live on Wednesday 5 May and put your questions to Ruth. The recording will be on the website within 24 hours, and you have it for four weeks.
£12, and a full year to watch.
Everything in the £6 ticket, with twelve months of access to the recording instead of four weeks. There are processing demos in this one, and a year gives you time to go back and follow along at your own pace.
The recording is watched here on our website. There is no download, and access is for the person who bought the ticket.
The talk runs for an hour or more, with time for your questions at the end.
Can't make it on the night? Every live talk goes on-demand afterwards, so you can still buy it and watch later.
