About the event:
We are delighted to welcome back community favourite Cherry Larcombe for a brand new four part series exploring the sophisticated world of minimalism. Cherry has spent the last few years refining her style and discovered a common thread running through her most successful work: a deep appreciation for the simple and the minimalist.
What is Minimalism?
Minimalism in photography is often misunderstood as being purely abstract, but it is actually a way of seeing that applies to every subject. It is the practice of stripping away the unnecessary to let the core subject stand out. Rather than just having fewer subjects, minimalism focuses on:
Learning to Let Go: Recognising what is not important and understanding the power in what is not there.
Overcoming Fear: Moving past the anxiety that leaving something out of the frame might lessen the image.
Subject Focus: Making your chosen subject truly stand out through simplified composition.
Why This Series is Super!
Minimalism is incredibly rewarding because it teaches you to find beauty in the most ordinary places. As Cherry says, it is about looking at simple things and making something out of nothing. This series will challenge you to look at your environment with fresh eyes and discover the hidden gems in your own surroundings.
Beyond the camera, this series explores a fascinating Photoshop element. Most of us have thousands of images stored on our hard drives, and Cherry will show you how to find minimalist pictures within those existing, forgotten files.
What Cherry will cover:
Across four sessions, Cherry will take us on a journey from defining the genre to practical application:
Session 1: Defining Minimalism: We begin by talking about what minimalism actually is and how any genre of photography can be shown in a minimalist way.
Camera and Computer: Learn how to recognise minimalist images within the camera and how to create them from pictures you have already taken, including live Photoshop editing.
Abstract, Still Life, and Nature: The following three sessions will look at minimalism within these specific genres in greater detail.
Inspiration: Discover international inspiration, such as the International Minimalist Photography Awards, that many people may not realise exists.
