About the event:

This is a three-part series:

  • Part 1: On Composition and Communication

  • Part 2: On Growth, Development and Personal Style

  • Part 3: On Negative Space and Minimalism

About the series (from Caroline):

The journey I hope to take people on is dispelling some common compositional myths, helping them understand how their compositional choices impact the viewer, helping them create more impactful images through their choices. I also hope to encourage them to go deeper - moving from looking at an image to experiencing it based on the choices made by the photographer. This knowledge can then help them be more intentional with their choices.

Then in Part 2 I will talk about the journey we all go on as we progress as a photographer, how we continue to grow, and will discuss things such as style and developing our individual photographic voice.

The final part will be how this all translates into my photography focussing on minimalism. It will look at motivations, influences, and compositional tools and techniques I use and why these work. Seeing how I put Parts 1 and 2 into practise and the choices I have made will hopefully help others when they consider their images.

From Caroline:

My photography is a reflection of both my life in London and my rural upbringing in a small country village in the South of England.

I am drawn to human elements and documenting everyday life, chance occurrences, captured moments, a look, a gaze, a feeling, an attitude, a time or a place.   But then I seek an escape from the hustle and bustle and create minimalist snowscapes and seascapes which for me represent 'space to breathe' away from the urban density of city life.

About Caroline:

Although she did not pick up a camera until 2013, Caroline grew up surrounded by photobooks containing images by the likes of Michael Kenna, Ansel Adams, and others, these quietly shaped her early visual sensibility. The break up of a relationship led her to start photographing herself — an act of starting over that quickly became something much more enduring. Whether photographing the street or the natural world, Caroline’s images feel distilled — stripped of excess, yet full of atmosphere.

There’s a sense of quiet anticipation in her work, waiting for just the right moment when light, subject, and composition come into balance. The result is a body of work that is minimal but not empty, calm but not passive — photography that invites reflection and rewards attention.

In addition to being a sought after photographic judge and speaker, Caroline has received recognition in a number of competitions including the International Photography Awards, British Photography Awards and Landscape Photographer of the Year. Her images have featured in the FRAMES Magazine digital companion.
