From Glenys:
Photographic typology is a study of images that can be grouped together in a photographic series and usually presented in a grid. We hope it will be a way to get people thinking creatively about a single subject and then find ways developing visualisation and presenting the elements in a consistent and effective way.
The overall idea:
We think it will make a great vehicle to get people thinking about how they use many of the wonderful techniques they’ve been learning from Camversation Talks to produce a series of images and then present them in a grid format. We won't be too restrictive on sticking closely to a particular static style of grid but encourage creative ways of using a grid.
Session1: Photographic Typologies - Intro
This session will give an introduction to the project, what is photographic typology, the history, the concept and what we will do in the 3 sessions.
Each typology begins with a single photograph and the aim is to create a relationship and/or connection between subjects that share a visual commonality that culminates in a grid presentation of a set of images with a consistent look and feel.
We will look at how to research ideas, get into the mindset of building a typology and suggestions on what to shoot. You will see plenty of examples from myself and others and you will be encouraged to use some of the techniques you’ve seen demonstrated in many of the Camversation Talks. The focus is to make something of your own that shows your ideas and creativity.
Session 2: Photographic Typologies - Style
Style can be defined as the manner in which we compose, shoot or process our images. It could include the genre, mood, colour, the lighting, composition etc
This will be useful regardless of whether or not you are attempting a topology, as developing a style can add another dimension to your work. One of the key features of making typologies is consistency and in this session we will talk about developing a specific look or feel to your images. We can do this by using in-camera techniques, specific lenses or in post-processing, so a large part of the session will be practical showing you how to create your own presets in Lightroom, Camera Raw and Photoshop
Session 3: Photographic Typologies – Making Grids
The core presentation style for a typology is a grid so the final session is all about presenting your work in this way. We will look at some of the tools you can use, ideas for layout with attention to balancing images within the grid and creating a consistent look.
We won’t be too restrictive on sticking closely to a particular static layout but encourage creative ways of using a grid. You will be shown how to make grids in the Lightroom Print Module, Photoshop and some Apps that might be useful.
Glenys' fee for this event will be given to charity at her request.
These talks will be recorded and made available for four weeks
There may be handouts available to support Session 1 - information on this will follow.
