About the event:
Rob Stimpson's photography is beautiful and his approach to supporting and helping others is incredibly accessible and down to Earth. It has been a real pleasure organising this presentation from Rob, who reached out to be part of the Camversation line up!
We have all been there. You stand in front of a spectacular sunrise or a breathtaking landscape. The light is perfect. You take the shot. But when you get home, the image looks… flat. It looks like a postcard, but it doesn't feel like the moment you experienced.
Why does that happen?
It is rarely about the camera you are using. It is about how you are interpreting the scene.
In this presentation, we're joined by Rob Stimpson, an expedition photographer with 25 years of experience shooting in some of the most challenging environments on Earth, from the High Arctic to Antarctica.
Rob believes that relying on expensive gear is a trap. As he puts it: "It is like telling a painter they must have really good paintbrushes because their paintings are amazing."
In this session, Rob will share:
The Postcard Trap: How to stop documenting the scene and start interpreting it.
Vision Over Gear: Why a £40,000 camera won't save a boring composition (and what actually will).
The Technical Framework: Ways to use light, shape and narrative to add depth to your images.
Finding Your Voice: How to break out of your comfort zone and develop a style that is uniquely yours.
About Rob:
Rob Stimpson is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and an award-winning photographer renowned for his images of the polar regions and the Canadian wilderness.
For over a decade, Rob has served as an expedition photographer, traveling to Antarctica, Greenland, and the Northwest Territories. His work has earned him the Northern Lights Award from the Canadian Tourism Commission and the Best Travel Photography Award from the Ontario Tourism Summit.
He is a photographer who doesn't just take pictures; he crafts narratives. Whether he is waiting hours for a polar bear to move into the perfect light or capturing the abstract motion of water, his work is a lesson in patience and vision.
