About the event:

Sue Bishop is incredibly well known for her beautiful floral images. I am so very pleased that she is able to join Camversation to present a talk on her passions. This is something which many people have requested, include other presenters.

About the talk

Sue's presentation starts with the basics of lens choice, which is crucial for achieving the desired aesthetic and technical qualities in photography. The lens you select can dramatically influence the perspective, depth of field, and overall composition of your images. Next, she will delve into the art of using light. Understanding the quality, direction, and color of light is essential for creating mood and atmosphere in your photographs.

Following this, Sue will discuss color in photography as this plays a significant role in how we perceive and emotionally respond to images. Choosing a background is another vital aspect of composition that we will explore. A well-chosen background can enhance the subject, while a cluttered or distracting backdrop can detract from it.

Finding a composition is essential for creating visually appealing photographs. Sue will discuss some compositional techniques and why these work particularly well with her photography.

Finally, we will take a look at other techniques like Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) and multiple exposures. ICM allows photographers to create abstract images by moving the camera during the exposure, resulting in a unique blend of colors and shapes that can evoke emotion and intrigue. Similarly, multiple exposures enable the combination of two or more images into a single frame, offering endless creative possibilities for storytelling and artistic expression.

About Sue:

Sue Bishop is an award winning flower and nature photographer based in the UK.  She has written three books about photography, "Photographing Flowers” (2004), "Digital Flower Photography” (2008), and "Color, Light & Composition” (2010), all published by GMC Publications.

Her aim is to create an image that goes beyond a simple record of its subject, and her compositions are a celebration of colour, light and shape.  Her distinctive images are impressionistic and ethereal, with a simplicity of composition, evoking her love of the natural world.

Sue has exhibited her work many times in venues including the Mall Galleries and Christies, London, and in 2004 she held a six week solo exhibition at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Lindley Library in London SW1.  She has been awarded in many competitions including the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year and International Garden Photographer of the Year.  She has been on the judging panel for Close-up Photographer of the Year since its foundation in 2019.

Sue is an inspirational lecturer and experienced workshop leader.  In 1994 she founded Light & Land, a company that organises photographic holidays all over the world.
