About the event:

From Mark We often talk about the technical side of photography, but rarely do we discuss its power to carry us through the hardest moments in life. Julie Cowdy is a wonderful friend of Camversation and when she told me about her latest journey, I knew it was a story that would resonate with so many of us. This is not a how-to lecture: it is a heart-to-heart about how a camera can become a tool for resilience and finding peace. I am also incredibly proud to share that Julie is donating her entire fee for this talk to charity.

About the Event

What happens to our creativity when life takes an unexpected turn? For Julie Cowdy, an accomplished photographer and former art teacher, a cancer diagnosis felt like the moment the creative mojo might disappear forever.

Instead, Julie discovered The Healing Lens.

In this session, Julie invites us into her world as she navigated recovery. She will share how she moved away from the pressure of perfection and technical rigour, finding a new, spontaneous way of working that prioritised her well-being over professional accolades.

It is a gentle, moving exploration of how mindful photography, mixed media and even simple stitching became the perfect distraction tactics during her treatment. Whether you are facing your own challenges or simply feel stuck in your creative process, Julie’s story of finding beauty in the simple unfolding of the seasons is a wonderful reminder of why we pick up a camera in the first place.

In this relaxed session, Julie will share:

  • The Power of Creative Resilience: how a hobby can become a vital lifeline during major life challenges.

  • Personal Distraction Tactics: the gentle methods Julie used, from iPhone photography to photo books, to keep her creative juices flowing.

  • The Joy of Letting Go: how releasing ourselves from high expectations can actually lead to our most authentic artistic expression.

  • Nature as a Partner: finding solace and inspiration in the simple birdsong and the changing seasons right outside our door.

About Julie

Julie Cowdy ARPS is a former Art and Design teacher who found a second calling in photography. Her work is a testament to the idea that it is never too late to create: her unexpected success in her 60s and 70s has seen her work exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London and the FIAP Colour Biennial in Paris. She is a multi-medal winner from the Royal Horticultural Society and a truly inspiring member of our community.

Our talks will be recorded and made available for FOUR weeks after the event.
