Why Photographic Projects Are Important:
Photographic projects are far more than mere collections of images; they are tools for personal expression, documentation, and commentary. In an age full of fleeting digital snapshots which appear then fade, a dedicated photographic project offers a structured way to fully explore a subject, develop a narrative, and create a lasting impact on both the photographer and the viewer.
Series breakdown:
The idea of this series has been inspired by questions so often raised to me during mentor sessions:
“I want to do something more with my photography, I want to focus on something for a while, like a project, but I have no idea where to start”.
This series is designed for photographers looking to move beyond single images and develop the skills to create images that work together to tell stories or messages far more than an individual image alone ever could.. Over three sessions, you will learn how to conceive, shoot, and complete a personal photographic project from start to finish, transforming your creative ideas into a polished final piece.
Session 1: Getting Started with Photographic Projects
This foundational session focuses on the "why" and "how" of starting a project. It’s about understanding what a project looks like and how (even without any idea right now of what you might want to do a project on) you can get started.
What You Will Learn:
Defining a Photographic Project: We will explore what constitutes a project versus a simple collection of photos. You'll learn that a project is a deliberate investigation of a subject over time, bound by a consistent theme and vision.
Finding Your Theme: We'll cover practical techniques to help you discover subjects you are passionate about. This includes looking at your personal interests, your local environment, or broader themes.
Get started exercises: You will have a set of ‘get started’ exercises to go and explore to generate your understanding of what constitutes a ‘set’ or project.
Benefits of this Session:
Gain Clarity and Focus: Move from feeling creatively adrift to having skills that will help you develop your photographic journey.
Overcome Creative Blocks: Learn structured techniques to generate meaningful ideas you are genuinely excited to work on.
Develop a Purposeful Practice: Transform your photography from a reactive hobby into a proactive and intentional creative pursuit.
Session 2: Creative Execution in the Field
This practical session is all about bringing your ideas to life. Using a number of accessible locations, you will learn to see the photographic potential in everyday environments and apply a variety of creative techniques to build your series.
Charlotte will be bringing you a selection of real life examples of project ideas to show you how she approaches exploration whilst working under the concept of a project.
What You Will Learn:
Seeing the Extraordinary in the Ordinary: You'll be challenged to look beyond the obvious and find compelling compositions, textures, colours, and light in familiar places.
Building a Visually Cohesive Set: We will focus on how to ensure your images work together. This involves maintaining a consistent approach to composition, lighting, technique and many other possible elements.
Benefits of this Session:
A chance to see inside the process as it unfolds.
Enhance Your Observational Skills: Train your eye to find beauty and interesting subjects anywhere, without needing to travel to exotic locations.
Session 3: Curation, Editing, and Presentation
The final session is where your project truly takes shape. A great project is not just about the photos you take, but also about the ones you choose not to show and how you present the final selection. This session covers the crucial final steps of refining your work towards a final selection
What You Will Learn:
The Art of Selecting: You will learn how to critically review your images and select only the strongest ones that serve your project's narrative and theme. This process, often called "killing your darlings," is essential for creating a tight, powerful series.
Sequencing for Impact: We will explore how the order of your images can dramatically change the story they tell. You'll learn principles of visual flow to guide the viewer through your project in a compelling way.
Consistent Post-Processing: We will cover how to use editing software to apply a consistent look and feel across all your selected images, enhancing the mood and ensuring visual cohesion. This includes adjustments to colour, tone, and contrast. This won’t go into the same level of detail as our other, dedicated post-processing sessions on Camversation.
Presenting Your Work: We will discuss the different ways you can share your finished project, whether it's creating a physical photo book, a gallery on your website, a social media series, or a set of prints.
Benefits of this Session:
Develop a Critical Eye: Learn to evaluate your own work objectively and make strong editorial decisions.
Master Visual Storytelling: Understand how to arrange images to create a powerful and emotionally resonant narrative.
Achieve a Professional Finish: Turn a folder of digital files into a polished, complete project that you can be proud to share with the world.
About Charlotte:
Charlotte Bellamy’s creative style of photography is inspired by the environment in which she lives. She takes inspiration for her work the minute she looks out of her window. The weather and the changes in season, offering her ever changing wonderment.
Her early photographic career tended towards portraits and weddings. However, with a move to the Netherlands, her interest in landscapes was triggered. After five years following a traditional landscape photography path, she felt a need to express her feelings about the locations she was photographing, rather than just capturing a technically perfect or pretty image of a place. Charlotte has never been one to follow the crowd. So, through a desire to push boundaries, and experiment outside of the expected, she has found a powerful way to express her creativity through Intentional Camera movement and multiple exposure layering of images.
These techniques she feels, help her to add texture, contrast and colour, resulting in images that then require more than a quick glance for the viewer to fully understand what they are looking at. Some of her images are created in a moment of spontaneity, whilst others are carefully combined to replicate a memory. Many of her images are made just a short walk from her house, and prove that you need not travel to beautiful and exotic locations to create unique images. Just that you be inspired and intrigued by a location.
