THE SHOT-LIST HANDOUT

Beyond the Obvious, with Julia Wainwright

You get home, look at the card and find twenty versions of the same picture.

Julia Wainwright's answer is a short list of prompts carried in your head,

and this is that list written down.

28 pages. Every slide from her Camversation session with her own written notes alongside it, so the thinking that went with each picture is on the page rather than only in the talk.

IT IS BUILT TO GO WITH THE SESSION

This handout follows Julia's presentation slide by slide, so the two belong together. Watch the evening with her, hear the stories behind the pictures, and then keep this beside you for the next time you are out. If you have not seen the talk, it is on the website on demand, and the handout will make a good deal more sense with it than without it.

WHAT IS IN IT

Five shot lists, not one:

- The core list. Seven prompts that cover most subjects: portrait and

character, interaction and story, action and the decisive moment, working

the light, subject and surroundings, embracing the conditions, and details,

simplicity and symmetry.

- A landscape list. Eight prompts for getting past the single grand view.

- A street and travel list. Eight for building a fuller sense of a place.

- A sport and action list. Eight for telling the whole story rather than the

winning moment.

- A creative list. Eight for deliberate experiment, from intentional camera

movement to a considered break in the pattern.

Plus a simple way to work on location: observe before settling on the first frame, secure the obvious photograph, run the prompts that suit the day, check the gaps before you leave, and stay available for whatever turns up.

And a page of questions for building a list of your own. What do you photograph automatically? What do you usually forget to look for? Which conditions do you avoid?

Julia's pictures run all the way through, from an Iberian lynx and a bald eagle to Inle Lake fishermen, sidecar racing in the dust and four different approaches to one lake in Turkey.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Most guides tell you how to do something. This one tells you what to look for, which is the part people forget in the field. It is small enough to read in a sitting and useful enough to open again the night before a trip.
