About the event:

It is a real honour for Stan to present to Camversation. I have enjoyed his work for a long time and he has been requested for many years!

From Stan:

This presentation is a little bit different in style to my other photographic presentations. It discusses why photographers should consider doing abstract work, and how this might have a spin-off into their other day-to-day photographic work.  The presentation includes a discussion of what abstract art is, and whether there is truly such a thing as abstract photography. It makes comparisons between abstract art and abstract photography, and  introduces the work of a few of the great abstract photographers of the past.

I then concentrate on how to create your own abstract images using some simple techniques that possibly haven’t occurred to you before. This part includes what to photograph and how to compose your work, before going on to develop some examples and ideas that you can try out for yourself.

About Stan:

I describe myself as a creative digital photographer.  When I took early retirement a few years ago, I returned to university to study Art History, and I spent three years on that. Nowadays I enjoy applying my interest in modern art to my photographic work which has been ongoing since childhood.

I was born in Teddington in Middlesex and I spent my childhood days in West London. I went to University in St Andrews in Scotland, and then stayed on in Scotland, at first teaching Biology in schools. Latterly though I returned to the University of St Andrews as Associate Director of Admissions and as Director of the Access Centre. I took early retirement in 2005.
