Please read this first. This guide was written to go alongside Janina Wilde's live workshop on the creative power of white balance. It is the written notes for that evening, not a course on its own. It assumes you have watched the session, or are about to, and it will not make a great deal of sense without it. If you do not already have the workshop, get that first.
 
In Janina's own words from the session: "I don't change white balance a bit. I change white balance a lot. I don't just change white balance to yellow and blue, I change white balance to red, to green, to purple."

One scene, a brick wall and two bare trees, photographed at eight Kelvin settings from 2350K to 16000K. Same wall, same trees, same afternoon.
Almost nobody has a real sense of what 4200K looks like next to 10500K until they see them side by side. Janina talks it through in the session. This is where you can go and look at it again, in your own time, without scrubbing back through an hour of video.
 
The technique at the centre of the evening, written down
 
Changing white balance between the frames of a single multiple exposure. One frame cool to push the blues, the next warm to lift the oranges, and the colours blending where the layers overlap, including the greens that appear where nobody put any green.
 
The answers to what people asked on the night
Elle asked which cameras can produce that pink white balance, and mentioned she shoots a Canon 5D Mark III. Pink is not on the Kelvin scale at all, which is why it is so hard to find. The guide gives the route, WB Shift, with the menu path for Canon and for Fujifilm.

Where Janina shows an image, she tells you what she set. 2500K for the blue coastal scene. 8400K to flood the warm brickwork. Two frames from the same Crosby Beach shoot in the same light, one at each, which look like they were taken in different countries.
