A Journey in Creative Inspiration and Seeing Differently

Fresh from the main stage at The Photography Show, Carys Jones joined the Camversation community for this celebrated 2-part series. Rather than a technical guide, these sessions are a deep dive into the artistic mindset, designed to help you find your own creative voice through the lens.

While the horse is often her muse, Carys explores universal creative concepts such as movement, soul, and emotion, which apply to any genre from coastal landscapes to intimate abstracts.

Part 1: The Artist’s Journey and Mindset

Carys shares her 40-year evolution as both a horse lover and a photographer, showing how she eventually merged these passions into a singular fine-art vision.

  • The Creative Mindset: Why curiosity and an open mindset are more important than expensive gear.

  • Low-Tech Innovation: An introduction to Carys’s secret weapons, using everyday items like shower caps, privacy glass, and offcuts of Flemish glass to break away from traditional sharp imagery and create something ethereal.

  • Reading the Soul: Understanding how to observe a subject’s habits and body language, such as ear position and posture, to capture a moment that sings.

Part 2: Innovation, Art and Finding the Abstract

The second session looks outward at how classical art, sculpture and even the hidden world around us can trigger new photographic ideas.

  • The Influence of Greats: See how the wildness of Turner, the dots of Pointillism, and the minimalist work of contemporary sculptors like Nicola Fixton and Nick Fiddian Green have shaped Carys’s approach to movement.

  • Landscapes Within: Carys explores the concept of finding landscapes where you least expect them, including the weathered hulls of boats in a dry dock or aerial views of salt marshes from a helicopter.

  • The Minimalist Vision: A look at Carys’s short and sweet approach to post-processing, where she uses a 2:1 crop and subtle desaturation to refine the final artistic feeling of an image.
