Surface Drift: Gelli Printing and Creative Photography

A Practical Workshop with Lynne Blount and Sylvie Gummery

Lynne Blount is a recognised figure in the Camversation community, celebrated throughout the UK and beyond for her creative artwork. In Surface Drift, Lynne is joined by Sylvie Gummery to guide you through the process of combining physical printmaking with creative photography.

The Joy of Creative Play

This workshop focuses entirely on the pleasure of hands-on, tactile play. By introducing physical textures that digital software cannot easily replicate, you unlock true creative freedom. Because no two prints ever emerge from the plate exactly the same, every texture you create is a one-off original. It is a brilliant way to bring physical art and photography together, helping you explore layers, tone, and depth before you even look at a computer screen.

What is Gelli Printing?

Gelli printing is a highly accessible and fun form of monoprinting that uses a flexible, gelatin-like plate as a reusable printing surface. You do not need an expensive printing press or a dedicated art studio to get started. By rolling acrylic paints or inks onto the plate, you can use stencils, stamps, leaves, or household items to create intricate, organic layers that provide the perfect foundation for your photographic art.

Stacking Images on Any Camera

The series covers how to cleanly blend your unique textures with real-world subjects:

  • In-Camera Layering: For cameras with built-in multiple exposure features, you will see how to stack exposures live using a variety of blending options.

  • Post-Processing Alternative: If your camera model does not support multiple exposures, don't worry. This workshop demonstrates how to achieve multi-layered results using standard software blend modes during the editing phase.

Workshop Breakdown:

  • Section 1: The Printmaking Process. Step into the studio to learn printmaking from scratch. Discover how paint opacity affects the way light passes through digital layers, master the broken patterns of the skippy brayer technique and create organic textures using Sumi inks and everyday objects.

  • Section 2: Selection and Curation. Learn the art of seeing within the chaos! Use physical frames and mat cutouts to isolate micro-landscapes and target the best compositions within your raw prints before moving to the camera layout.

  • Section 3: Capture and Blending. Discover how white balance adjustments and specific Kelvin values can completely shift the mood of your files. This section features a dedicated indoor still-life demonstration using garden foliage - a perfect creative solution for when the British weather keeps you indoors.

  • Section 4: The Post-Processing Suite . This section provides instructional value that justifies the price of the series alone! Lynne takes you into her non-destructive editing workflow in Photoshop and Lightroom. She covers blend modes (Vivid Light, Overlay, and Saturation), utilises stamp layers to isolate edits and add professional borders and drop shadows for a gallery-ready finish.
