Most of us treat white balance as the thing you correct afterwards. Janina Wilde treats it as a decision made before the shutter, and it is why her multiple exposures look like nothing else.
In her own words: "I don't change white balance a bit. I change white balance a lot. I don't just change white balance to yellow and blue, I change white balance to red, to green, to purple."
This is the full hour, recorded live with our community in September 2026.
What Janina covers
What white balance actually is, and why your eyes cope with changing light when your camera cannot. What the Kelvin scale really means, and the one thing you need to remember about it.
Then one scene, a brick wall and two bare trees, photographed at rising Kelvin values so you can see exactly what each setting does. Her advice for anyone starting out is to go bold or go home, because a timid change to 6,000K will leave you wondering what the fuss was about.
Two warm frames together. Crosby Beach in the middle of an August afternoon, turned golden, with bokeh made from defocused wet stones.
Crosshatching, which is the technique her regulars ask for most. An upward movement, a sideways movement, a fifteenth of a second, and a picture full of tiny crosses.
Why she reaches for blue, which is most of the time. London bridges, beach huts, and a six-exposure build with a ghost bird that only landed on one layer.
One cool frame combined with one warm one, and the green that appears in the overlap where nobody put any green.
Blend modes. Dark mode, light mode and average, what each one does to your colours, and why dark mode gives you the most of it. Janina's point throughout is that if you understand what the camera is doing when it combines two frames, you can compose for it rather than hope. The beach hut image is the clearest example: the sea appears inside the hut with no masking at all, purely because the huts are white and she shot it in dark mode.
Beyond blue and orange. Using the white balance grid to go pink, green or purple, with the route shown on Fujifilm and on Canon. A long exposure taken twice at different settings, which turned the sky pink and the sea purple. And mixing black and white with colour, which some cameras will do and others will not.
Reading it back. How to find the white balance you used in your RAW files afterwards, so you can learn from what worked.
The questions from the room
Whether bokeh needs sand or stones. Whether you can start a multiple exposure from an image already on your card, and which cameras allow it. How to change Kelvin quickly without scrolling through every value. The workaround for OM System cameras with no dark mode. Whether she uses a tripod, and the one situation where she does.
About Janina
Janina Wilde spent twenty-six years as a school science teacher, finishing in July 2026, and now teaches multiple exposure full time. That background shows. She is less interested in giving you a recipe than in making sure you understand what your camera is doing, so you can make your own choices rather than copy hers.
What people said on the night
Sharon: "Makes me feel like an artist."
Mandy: "This looks so painterly."
Sue, joining from Auckland: "Such an inspiring talk. Lovely to get something out of the box to experiment with."
Barry: "Thoroughly inspiring. I'm going to dig out my old Nikon film camera and some slide film. I'm on fire."
What you will need
A camera you can set white balance on manually, which is most of them.
In-camera multiple exposure is a bonus rather than a requirement, and Janina is clear that anything done in camera can also be done afterwards in software. This session is taught at the camera though, so that is where the detail sits.
The written guide
Janina wrote a companion guide for this session. It has her Kelvin reference page, the menu routes for going pink, and her own settings on her own pictures.
